Madison Square was named in 1837, after the fourth President of the United States (and acclaimed the "Father of the Constitution") James Madison. Madison Square Park is located within Madison Square. The park itself opened in 1847, but was re-landscaped in the 1870s after Broadway had to be enlarged. More then 300 trees, as well as notable sculptures and the outstanding Southern Fountain, give a unique atmosphere to the park. Among the greatest trees of Madison Square Park (including historic English elms), the James Madison Tree. The Red Oak was transplanted in the park in 1936, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Madison Avenue. The tree comes originally from the James Madison's estate, Montpelier, Virginia.
