Union Square Greenmarket
Union Square
New York
NY 10003
Nowadays, food concern is becoming a global situation in terms of environmental awareness. New Yorkers have been pioneers in that field, and one can find a wide choice of sustainable products at the Union Square Greenmarket since 1976. Four times a week there, farmstands participate to a healthier life in Manhattan, as well as education programs and culinary demonstrations. Union Square Greenmarket is managed by GrowNYC, a nonprofit founded in 1970 and dedicated to environmental considerations (education, recycling, gardening). From the late fifties to the mid-seventies, Union Square district began to decline, and consequently, many features of the square itself have been vandalized. Union Square Greenmarket has played a significant role in the regeneration of the area, from a run-down neighborhood to a prosperous community.
