Decker Building
33 Union Sq W
New York
NY 10003
Originally built to host a piano manufacturer, the tall and narrow building was designed by architect John Edelmann in 1892. The elegant facade alternates Venetian-style elements to moorish ogees curves, and the Decker Building is the only surviving construction from the radical socialist-anarchist architect. Nowadays, the Decker Building is famous for being the site of Andy Warhol's Factory from 1967 to 1973. This is the place where, in June 1968, Valerie Solanas attempted to murder the artist. The factory was the place famed for its intellectual & bohemian lifestyle as much as the creativity of Andy Warhol's clique (Warhol superstars). An endless list of celebrities walked through the Decker building, from Paul Morrissey to the most celebrated interior designer Jed Johnson ( who was initially the handyman of the Factory). In this place, Andy Warhol and John Wilcock founded Interview magazine in 1969.
